On Friday, January 2, in his evening video address, Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that Mykhailo Fedorov, who currently holds the position of First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Transformation, may become the new Minister of Defense. This appointment will follow the resignation of Denys Shmyhal, as reported by Deutsche Welle.

The President emphasized that Fedorov has achieved significant success in developing the "drone line" and digitizing public services, making him a suitable candidate for this key role in the military.

Zelensky also noted that Denys Shmyhal will remain in the government and will head another important area that will help strengthen the country's resilience. At the same time, the president added that personnel changes in the government are not yet complete.

Mykhailo Fedorov, born in 1991 in the Zaporizhzhia region, will become the youngest Minister of Defense of Ukraine in history if appointed. In 2019, during Zelensky's election campaign, Fedorov was responsible for the digital direction and later became a freelance advisor to the president. That same year, he was elected to the Verkhovna Rada from the "Servant of the People" party.

Since August 2019, Fedorov has held the position of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Transformation, and from 2023 to 2025, he served as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Innovation, Education, Science, and Technology. On July 16, 2025, he was appointed First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Transformation in the government of Yulia Svyrydenko.

One of his significant projects was the launch of the online public services platform "Diia," which provides a wide range of services in electronic format.
