The conviction resulted from the couple being found guilty of corrupt actions.
The investigation established that the spouses acquired gifts, including jewelry, received from high-ranking officials in Saudi Arabia, at significantly undervalued prices compared to their market value during Khan's tenure as Prime Minister. Prosecutors claim they declared an amount of just over 8,500 euros, while the actual value of these gifts is estimated at 244,700 euros.
According to Pakistani law, public servants and politicians are required to acquire gifts received from foreign high-ranking officials at market value and declare all income from their subsequent sale.
Khan's lawyer, Salman Safdar, stated the intention to appeal the court's decision. Khan's spokesperson, Zulfiqar Bukhari, characterized the verdict as a violation of the principles of justice and noted that criminal liability was established without sufficient evidence of intent or financial loss.
The opposition party "Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf," founded by Khan, condemned the court ruling, calling it a "black page in history." In an official statement, the party also noted that Khan's family was not allowed to be present at the announcement of the verdict.
The country's information minister, Attaullah Tarar, stated that the conviction of Khan and his wife was the result of an analysis of compelling evidence, and the court made a fair decision.
Imran Khan, who is 73 years old, was ousted from the position of Prime Minister in April 2022 after a vote of no confidence in the National Assembly. Although his party is now in opposition, he remains popular in the country. Khan has been serving his sentence since 2023.
