In Kyrgyzstan, a digital som will be introduced starting in 2027

In Kyrgyzstan, the digital som will officially be introduced on January 1, 2027, as announced by Azat Kozubekov, Deputy Chairman of the National Bank of the Kyrgyz Republic, at a press conference on February 24.

According to him, the law regulating the issuance of the digital som will come into effect as scheduled, allowing for its circulation to begin. Currently, the National Bank is actively working on the implementation of this project in collaboration with partners.

The digital som, or sanарип сом, represents an electronic version of the national currency, which will be issued by the National Bank. This type of currency will have the status of legal tender, with one digital som being equivalent to one cash som. Given that the digital currency will be backed by guarantees from the regulator, there is a provision for the recovery of funds if necessary.

Kozubekov also noted that this year, more detailed information about the progress of the pilot project is expected to be published, which remains one of the regulator's priority areas of work.
