According to sources, the incident occurred during a scheduled inspection of confiscated crypto assets in Gwangju. The prosecutors conducting the audit accidentally accessed a fraudulent website, resulting in a data leak.
According to a statement from a prosecutor's representative, the loss of bitcoins has been confirmed; however, the exact amount of damage and the number of lost coins were not disclosed. The prosecutor's office continues to take measures to recover the funds, although the chances of success diminish if the stolen crypto assets are moved to external wallets.
Interestingly, just two weeks before the information about the loss became public, the Supreme Court of South Korea issued a ruling, announced on January 9, which allows for the seizure of bitcoins held on cryptocurrency exchanges in accordance with the Criminal Procedure Code.
This case involved 55.6 BTC that were seized from a money laundering suspect and were worth about 600 million won.
The situation regarding the loss of bitcoins is not the only incident in Gwangju. In November 2021, 1476 BTC disappeared during a police operation to seize funds from a gambling site. Legal proceedings in this case are still ongoing in the Supreme Court. The current fraud incident is a separate case involving prosecutors.
