In 2025, the German automaker Volkswagen took first place in electric vehicle sales in Europe, surpassing Tesla, according to information provided by Kazinform citing DW.
According to a report by the consulting firm JATO, Volkswagen sold 274,278 electric vehicles, an increase of 56% compared to 2024. The main factor for this growth was new models, including the mid-size electric vehicle ID.7, which allowed Volkswagen to overtake the American Tesla, which had previously dominated the European market.
Although exact sales data for Tesla in Europe for 2025 is unavailable, JATO reports a 27% decrease in their volumes. Experts attribute this trend to the deterioration of Elon Musk's company's reputation in Germany and a focus on models that no longer meet the current demands of the European market.
Nevertheless, Tesla's Model Y remained the best-selling electric vehicle model in Europe in 2025. The second place was taken by the Elroq electric crossover from Skoda, which also belongs to the Volkswagen Group.
It was previously reported that in 2025, global electric vehicle sales increased by 20% compared to 2024, reaching a record 20.7 million units. Almost 13 million of these were in China.
