A group of retired tourists from Kara-Balta enjoys volleyball every winter, despite the frost and snow, at an altitude of 1200 meters above sea level.

These active leisure enthusiasts have been making weekly day trips to the Almaly Gorge (also known as the Apple Gorge) in the Jayil District of the Chui Region for over ten years. The average age of the participants is over 70 years.

Olga Antonova, one of the participants, shared: “We go hiking year-round. The only thing that can stop us is extremely bad weather. However, last weekend the weather in the mountains was wonderful: the sun was shining, the air was fresh, and the snow was soft and fluffy. This created perfect conditions for physical activity and hardening. We had a great time playing volleyball in the forest, and afterwards we went sledding down the hill. After such activities, our mood stays high all week.”

As the tourists themselves note, their outings are not about setting records, but serve to maintain health, activity, and social interaction. Even in winter, participants find time for active outdoor recreation, and the route through the Almaly Gorge has become a true tradition for them.
