Kyrgyzstan has become a world leader in the number of women in parliament, according to a new report published by the Inter-Parliamentary Union on the official website of the United Nations.
According to the report, as of January 1, 2026, women occupy 27.5% of seats in parliaments worldwide, which is slightly higher than in 2025, when this figure was 27.2%.
The largest increase in the number of women deputies was recorded in Kyrgyzstan, where the proportion of women in the Jogorku Kenesh increased by 12.9%. Currently, 30 out of 90 members of parliament are women.
According to the legislation, in multi-member electoral districts, one of the three mandates must be held by a female candidate.

In the ranking, Kyrgyzstan is followed by Saint Vincent and the Grenadines with 12.3%, while in the upper house of the parliament of Saint Lucia, women make up 9.1%.
At the same time, in Oman, Tuvalu, and Yemen, there are no female deputies in the lower houses of parliament or in unicameral parliaments.
The report emphasizes that quotas remain one of the most effective ways to increase women's representation in parliaments.
Statistics show that in 2025, in parliaments with legislative or voluntary quotas, women held an average of 30.9% of seats, while in parliaments without quotas, this figure was 23.3%.
The report is based on the results of elections held in 49 countries in 2025, and last year, the composition of 62 parliaments worldwide was updated.
