The Epic of "Manas". Shooting at the Golden Jamb.

Shooting at the Golden Jamba
The return of the galloping horses,
Will take seven or eight days.
And it was necessary to entertain
The guests with games and spectacles.
They hung on two pines
With thin silk strings
A jamba made of gold ingot.
A diamond inserted in a circle
Shines and tempts the eye.
And if you break the silk strings
With a bullet or an arrow —
The golden ingot with the diamond
Will be yours for accuracy!
The guests shot hundreds of times,
Squinting their keen eyes,
But no one could hit the target!
Konurbay stepped up to the target.
He shot an arrow ten times,
Then he shot from a gun —
But all attempts were in vain!
With a guttural cry he roared,
To show that he was the best shot,
He shot at the target, Neskar,
But only provoked loud laughter.
Decided to test his luck
In shooting at the target, Jolo himself.
Squinting his narrow keen eye,
He shot at the disk more than once,
But could not hit the target at all.
Overconfident Jolo
Was dissatisfied with himself.
But then er-Manas rose up!
He struck twice on the dobulbas —
And immediately forty young men
Stood in two rows of twenty.
And to the center stepped chal-Kyrgyl
And tossed the tebetey up.
Bakay shot from his bow
And, hitting the tebetey with an arrow,
Did not let it fall to the ground.
And forty skillful marksmen,
Piercing this tebetey,
Held it high in the sky!
Satisfied with the spectacle, Manas
Struck three times on the dobulbas —
And forty valiant choro
Instantly lined up in a row
And, loading their guns,
Opened fire at the jamba.
Khan Bakay stepped up to the target
On the swift-footed Bozhorgo —
And with one shot from the run
He broke the thin string.
Azhybay rushed after him —
And shot another thread.
On his faithful friend Sarala
Almanbet stepped up to the target —
And the target was pierced.
After him rushed Kokala —
And with a precise shot, Chubak
Broke another string.
Syrgak, pressing the trigger,
Broke yet another string.
One jamba held the thread —
No one could break it,
Until Manas himself stepped up
With the mighty gun Ak-kelte.
Black smoke puffed from the barrel —
Between the branches and through the leaves,
Shining with a golden disk,
The target fell to the grass!
Manas took the golden ingot
And presented it to Koshoy as a gift.
And the wise uncle Koshoy
Touched the jamba with his hand:
— Since this is the first prize,
Let it remain with you! —
With victory, he blessed everyone
And returned the prize to Manas.
