In a small mountainous country, where the population has just surpassed five million people, competition in the field of Internet and mobile communication is quite developed (this fact is relative when compared to larger countries).
GSM. In Kyrgyzstan, mobile communication services are provided by three popular operators: BEELINE, MEGACOM, and "O", all of which offer GSM standard mobile connection along with GPRS. The local population considers the operator "O" to be the most advantageous in terms of pricing policy (under certain conditions, communication within the network is free here). The price for "O" services: from 0.69 som (≈0.0147 USD, "Shock+" tariff) for mobile communication, and from 1.39 som (≈0.0295 USD) for 1 MB of Internet.
However, the coverage area of "O" significantly lags behind BEELINE (formerly BITEL), a wireless communication operator that has obvious advantages in coverage area, due to the monopolization of such services (during the government of A. Akayev) in the initial period of mobile connections entering the Kyrgyz market. The price for BEELINE services: from 0.75 som (≈0.0159 USD, "Freestyle+" tariff) for calls, and from 1.45 som (≈0.0308 USD) for 1 MB of Internet (much cheaper in packages).
The younger generation uses the services of MEGACOM more due to its relatively wide coverage area and acceptable pricing for Internet, as well as for mobile communication services. The only unattractive aspect of this operator's preference is the legal disputes that follow MEGACOM — they sometimes affect its operations... Prices for MEGACOM services: from 0.95 som (≈0.0202 USD, "Wave" tariff) for calls and from 0.75 som (≈0.0159 USD, "FAST INTERNET" tariff) for 1 MB of Internet.
CDMA. It should be noted in advance that operators using this standard connect only with identification documents. Among the operators offering this standard, FONEX is the most popular, with service prices starting from 0.27 som (≈0.0057 USD, "Start 27" tariff) for calls, and from 0 tyiyn to 1.5 som (≈0.0319 USD, "Internet package" tariff) for 1 MB.
The services of the "NEXI" operator are slightly cheaper: the call charge ranges from 0.2 som to 1 som (≈0.0042 USD, "Universal" tariff), Internet — up to 1.5 som (≈0.0319 USD, same tariff) for 1 MB.
Free Wi-Fi zones greet visitors to Kyrgyzstan in the airports of major cities, accompany them in many public places in the capital (cafes, restaurants, nightclubs, etc.), and are available in a more limited number in the provinces. In popular recreation areas, for example, on Issyk-Kul, Wi-Fi is available in some boarding houses and guest houses, but there is no Internet on the beaches, so the best choice for those who are used to frequently using the World Wide Web would be to carry a 3G modem.
