During a meeting with local residents, the director of the "Manas" theater, Nurbek Saparbek uulu, shared interesting information about the origin of the name "Kochkor." He noted that this name is not related to a male sheep, as many believe, but comes from the name of one of Manas's companions.

Saparbek uulu mentioned that while browsing social media, he encountered discussions claiming that the name "Kochkor" is associated with a legendary ram. However, he confidently refuted this opinion, stating: "The name of this land has its roots in the epic of 'Manas.' The first wife of Jakyp, Chiyyrdy, gave birth to the sons Manas and Karlygach, while the second wife Bakdöölöt had six sons: Abyke, Kөbösh, Chiybyt, Kochkor, Adybay, and Kölbay."

After Manas's death, his six sons born to Bakdöölöt seized the throne. Kөbösh became the khan of the Argin and Nogai tribes in Talas. When Semetey, the son of Manas, returned to Talas as he grew up, Abyke and Kөbösh began a feud, gathering forty choro (warriors) against him.

Despite Semetey's repeated pleas to the choro to stay close and honor his father's memory, they fled to China twice. Only on the third occasion, when they reached the Kyzart pass, did Semetey catch up with them, once again begging them to stay and throwing a belt around his neck as a sign of humility.

Abyke and Kөbösh incited their younger brothers—Kochkor, Medet, and Sedet—to attack Semetey. At that time, Külchoro entered the battle, pursuing them from the Kyzart pass to the lower reaches of Kochkor, killing everyone he caught.

In the course of this conflict, one of them—Kochkor—was killed and buried here. At that moment, Semetey said: "Kochkor-ata was a comrade of my father. Although he betrayed me, he once served my father. Let his name be remembered, and this land be called Kochkor."

Since then, this area has carried that name. The tombs (mausoleums) of the forty choro of Manas are located in places such as Kum-Döbö, Dөng-Alysh, and Semiz-Bel.
