The President of the Kyrgyz Republic has submitted a request to the Constitutional Court for an official interpretation of the Constitution. The focus is on the norms regulating the terms of office of the current president and the process for appointing regular or early elections, as reported by the president's administration.
This clarification has become necessary due to disagreements that have arisen in society and among experts regarding the interpretation of the Fundamental Law on these issues.
In order to prevent political conflicts and reduce the level of distrust in state institutions, as well as to avoid disputes and potential risks, the president has requested clarification of Articles 67, the second paragraph of Part 2 of Article 68, and Part 1 of Article 72 of the Constitution (as amended on May 5, 2021). These norms should be considered in the context of the changes made to the Constitution in 2010, as well as in accordance with the Law "On the Constitution of the Kyrgyz Republic," which was adopted in a referendum on April 11, 2021. The request also discusses the procedure and timelines for conducting elections.
The consideration of the request is scheduled for February 17, and the Constitutional Court will review it as a priority in written form.
