The issue affects BMW vehicles with starter relays produced between July 2020 and July 2022. Specifically, this concerns the BMW 2 Series Coupe, various versions of the 3rd, 4th, and 5th Series, the 6th Series Gran Turismo, as well as the X4, X5, X6, and Z4 models.
BMW also warned drivers that if problems arise with the vehicle, they may notice smoke or smell something unusual while driving or when exiting the car. It is recommended not to leave the vehicle with the engine running unattended. In the fall of 2025, the company had already conducted a recall of hundreds of thousands of its vehicles due to similar starter issues also related to fire risk.
