In schools of Kazakhstan, phones may be completely banned — even during breaks

As reported by Ulysmedia.kz, the possibility of a complete ban on the use of mobile phones in schools in Kazakhstan is being discussed.

Amendments regarding this issue have been introduced into the draft law on the reform of the education sector and the status of teachers, which is currently under consideration by the deputies. The ban on the use of smartphones is planned to be extended not only to lessons but also to breaks. The new version of the draft law states that students will be prohibited from using mobile devices throughout the entire school day.

Exceptions may only be made for cases that will be approved by the relevant educational authority. Currently, the law allows the use of mobile phones for educational purposes if this is provided for in the curriculum.

However, in the new version, these concessions are excluded. The development of the rules will be carried out and approved by the relevant ministry.

The authors of this proposal are confident that expanding the ban will reduce instances of cyberbullying, limit access to unwanted content, and improve discipline among students. They also believe that this could enhance the level of face-to-face communication among schoolchildren and create a calmer atmosphere in educational institutions.
