In the Jogorku Kenesh, the number of women deputies has reached 31, setting a new world record, as announced by the Speaker of Parliament Marlen Mamataliyev at a general meeting.

He noted that according to data provided by the United Nations and the Inter-Parliamentary Union, Kyrgyzstan now ranks first in the world for the number of women in parliament.

Mamataliyev emphasized the importance of adhering to quotas for women both in committees and in international parliamentary groups.

“Yesterday we updated the record by increasing the number of women deputies to 31. The presidium maintains a 30% quota for women. The rotation of committee leaders was completed yesterday, and for the first time in history, this quota was fully observed: women became chairpersons of the committees. There are also women deputies among the deputy chairpersons. In international parliamentary friendship groups, women have led the groups for the first time. There is a saying in Kyrgyz culture: ‘Kyzdyn kyrk chachy uluy’ (which can be translated as the wisdom of a woman is great). May our women always be respected,” the speaker stated.

According to a new report from the Inter-Parliamentary Union of the UN, Kyrgyzstan has become a world leader in the number of women deputies.

The same report notes that over the past year, the largest increase in the number of women in parliament has been observed specifically in Kyrgyzstan: the share of women has increased by 12.9%. Currently, out of 90 deputies in the Jogorku Kenesh, 31 are women. According to the law, in multi-mandate electoral districts, one out of three mandates must be allocated to a female candidate.
