The UN has expressed its expectation to receive clarifications from the Trump administration regarding the repayment of the debt of nearly 4 billion dollars. According to Kazinform, the information came from NBC News.
Last week, UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned of a potential financial collapse of the organization if its financial rules are not revised or if all 193 member states do not make their contributions.
Of this amount, 2.19 billion dollars pertains to the regular operational budget, including 767 million dollars that are to be paid in the current year. Additionally, the US owes another 1.8 billion dollars for the peacekeeping operations budget, and this amount continues to grow.
The US mission to the UN confirmed that in the coming weeks, the Trump administration intends to pay a significant portion of the debt; however, the final amount has not yet been determined.
In a letter to UN member states, Guterres noted that the regular operational budget could run out of funds as early as July, which would negatively impact the organization's activities.
