According to information from RIA Novosti, only about 10% of ocean inhabitants are known to science.
The question of the number of animal species inhabiting the ocean remains open for scientists. According to their estimates, humanity is familiar with only 10-20% of all marine creatures," noted Andrey Gebruk, Doctor of Biological Sciences and head of the laboratory of benthic fauna of the ocean at the P.P. Shirshov Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
As Gebruk emphasized, the proportion of known species is likely closer to 10%.
"Personally, I believe that we have described only about 10% of all existing species in the ocean. This is extremely low," he added.
