At a meeting of the Jogorku Kenesh Committee on Agrarian Policy, Water Resources, Subsoil Use, Ecology, and Environmental Protection, the Minister of Natural Resources, Ecology, and Technical Supervision, Meder Mashiev, reported that the main factor contributing to atmospheric pollution in Bishkek and the Chui region remains the use of coal in the private sector, which accounts for almost 40% of the total volume of pollutants.
In his speech, he also pointed out that exhaust gases from outdated vehicles make up about 30%, emissions from thermal power plants account for 15%, and dust raised by the wind adds 13.5% to the pollution. Industrial enterprises contribute 1.5% of harmful substances to the atmosphere.
According to "Kyrgyzhydromet," air quality in the region has improved over the past two years. Measures are being taken to reduce dependence on coal through gasification. In 2023, the provision of loans at 8% interest began, and this year the interest rate has been reduced to 3% for borrowers who can receive up to 150,000 soms. Additionally, this year a loan agreement was signed with the World Bank for $50 million and a grant project with KOICA for $10 million to implement these initiatives," the minister noted.
