At the flea market in the Jayil district of the Chui region, there is a high demand for spinning wheels. These ancient mechanisms, which can sometimes be found for sale, attract the attention of buyers.

Models of spinning wheels, aged between 50 and 100 years, in good condition and functional, are priced from 1500 to 2500 soms. They sell out very quickly, even though they are not used for yarn.

Modern craftsmen use these devices in interior design, creating vintage elements that have become popular among decor enthusiasts and are quite expensive.

Maxim Podgorny, a local historian, explains that a spinning wheel is a wooden spinning device with a wheel. These mechanisms first appeared in India and spread around the world, reaching Russia in the 18th century.

“When spinning wheels arrived in Kyrgyzstan from Russia, they replaced traditional hand spindles, significantly simplifying the work of local craftswomen, increasing productivity, and improving the quality of yarn. In the early 20th century, the spinning wheel became a symbol of women's labor in our country; it was cherished, not lent to neighbors, and an old one could be gifted to a bride at her wedding. The production of spinning wheels in Kyrgyzstan continued until the 1980s. Today, designers skillfully integrate spinning wheels into interiors, turning them into unique pieces of art, such as flower stands or coffee tables,” the historian added.
