How the children of the woman who committed self-immolation at Issyk-Kul live – a human rights check

On February 26, employees of the Ombudsman Institute visited the four children of the woman who committed self-immolation at Issyk-Kul, according to information provided by the organization's press service.

Recall that the tragedy occurred in the Ak-Suu district when the woman set herself on fire after learning about her 17-year-old daughter's pregnancy.

According to human rights defenders, the family lives in the Ak-Suu district, and the pregnant girl is the eldest of the children. She studies at a vocational college and has two younger sisters, aged 15 and 6, as well as a 14-year-old brother.

The family was registered as low-income, and their mother, M.A., had been receiving child benefits since 2018.

According to local authorities, last year, with the help of charitable organizations, a house was built for the family. In addition, the village council provided financial assistance as the woman was raising the children alone after the divorce.

Currently, the children are under the guardianship of their mother's elder sister. The issue of official guardianship will be resolved in the near future.

The pregnant minor also remains at home with relatives. The police are conducting an investigation based on her testimony.

At the Ombudsman Institute, it was noted that the head of the agency, Jamilya Dzhamanbaeva, is closely monitoring the situation of the minor girl M.Z., who has found herself in a difficult life situation.

She is also insisting on an objective investigation into the circumstances of the woman's death.

The Ombudsman calls on government agencies to take comprehensive measures to protect the rights of the deceased woman's children and to provide them with the necessary social assistance.
