Means of Communication and Communications
Radios are provided by the organizers of hunting tours. Since bringing communication devices into Kyrgyzstan is only allowed with special permits, including for further use, a frequency permit is also required. It is better not to take the risk and not bring your own, as there is a high probability they will be confiscated at customs.
To secure the radio, a pocket on the unloading vest should be provided. You won't have to use the radio much, but it is extremely convenient. Especially during drives, as you often won't see the driver in the mountains, and other means of communication do not work. Using the radio is not complicated but can be extremely effective. You should familiarize yourself with the radio in advance, right at the base camp.
Satellite communication is often the only way to connect with civilization; all satellite communication systems such as Thuraya and Inmarsat operate in the mountains of Kyrgyzstan. Often, base hunting camps do not have satellite phones, and if you need one, you should inform them in advance about the rental. The battery is charged from a 220-volt power supply, and there are generators in the base camps. If you plan to use a satellite phone away from the base camp, you should take care to have a compact solar panel.
