The Epic "Manas". The Testament of Manas

Manas's Testament
Embracing Kanike by the shoulders,
He said to his beloved:
— Be brave, my faithful,
It seems my time has come.
Take care of yourself for our son!
When you bury me,
Run to Bukhara, to your father —
Let our Semetey grow there!
Here, in his homeland,
He will not see bright days.
And the brothers Abike, Kobesh
Will not let you live here,
And if you resist,
They will find a reason and kill.
And they will turn our son
Into a mankurta right away,
Forcing him to herd cattle.
When Semetey grows up,
Tell him about my life,
Who his father Manas was,
That his homeland is Talas.
Raise him as a hero,
With a loyal, fighting retinue
Send him on a campaign to his native land.
Gather the Kyrgyz into a khanate,
Restore unity once more!
Bury me in the mountains,
So that no one knows my grave,
So that enemies, out of wicked revenge,
Do not desecrate me.
Let Bakai and uncle Koshoy
Know the secret about me.
Send news to Turfan, to the Kalmyks,
To the brave maiden Kyz-Saykal:
I promised to take as a wife
The beloved maiden in this world.
Cover me for the last time
With the armor of ak-olpok,
And let my gun lie beside me —
My unfailing ak-kelte.
Hang the bag with boz-kise
Here on the kerege.
At my head, place
My damask sword Zulpuqor.
And to my right, set
The steel spear syr-nayzu.
And in my right hand, give
My beloved whip.
Fulfill my request —
And I will meet my last moment
Not as a feeble old man —
But as a warrior, wounded in battle!
From yellow-billed chicks
I raised mighty golden eagles.
The scattered Kyrgyz kin
I gathered into one people,
Returned to the land of our ancestors.
And for the descendants for centuries
I preserved the homeland.
And in cold, hunger, and poverty
I gathered wealth and treasury,
Created a mighty khanate.
I am happy, before death I rejoice,
That for my Kyrgyz people,
For the honor and homeland,
I give my life, unflinchingly.
I believe, for the great labor
The descendants will honor us!
