LETTER FROM JANTAY KARABEKOV TO THE CHIEF OF THE ALATAV DISTRICT, THE OFFICIAL IN CHARGE OF THE KAZAKHS OF THE SENIOR JUZ G.A. KOLPAKOVSKY

February 1863

To the Chief of the District from Jantay, many bows and the following requests: I, along with my family and people, am healthy and prosperous, praying for your well-being.

We have heard that 400 people from the Kipchaks have arrived in Merke under the command of Anarbek. The son of Baizak, Tyuregeldi, is said to have gone as an envoy to the sultans. However, no envoys have come to us in Auliieta. It is also said that an army has arrived, but whether this is true—we do not know. The sultans and the Sarybagysh proclaim the departure of the Sart, but we do not participate in their proclamations and greetings, but pray for your health and hope that you will drive them away in the spring. Since the time my son Shadman went and took horses from the Kyrgyz under the control of the Kipchaks, they consider us enemies and do not send us either people or letters.

Since the time the son of Baizak went on matters concerning his wife, all the sultans have gone down, and only a few have remained with the aim of staying loyal to you. But this is justly so; we do not know if it is good.

Our extreme volosts are located on Kebin, and I am on Kara-kunuz. Currently, we have grass and it is good in winter, and if it is grazed and there is a shortage in winter, we hope you will allow us to move to Argayty. I send you and your wife 40 pheasants, and I ask you to send us a bag of rice for the fast.
