At a meeting of the Jogorku Kenesh, the Minister of Water Resources, Agriculture, and Processing Industry Bakyt Torobaev reported that beans are now a commodity that can be traded on the international exchange.
He noted that the price of a ton of beans has fallen from $1600 to $930. According to an analysis conducted, it was found that Kyrgyz beans are mainly exported in raw form, while other countries engage in fumigation and quality packaging, which significantly increases their market price.
Additionally, the minister added that activities for fumigation and improving the packaging of beans have begun in Kyrgyzstan. It was also proposed to integrate beans as a protein source into the diets of the army and schoolchildren.
Torobaev also reported on the instruction to calculate transportation costs for export. He emphasized the importance of adhering to quality standards: there should be about 200 beans in 100 grams, and the calibration should be at least 7–8 mm, however, currently this figure is only 5–6 mm.
In light of the current situation, the ministry is suggesting that farmers in the Talas region consider options for transitioning to other agricultural crops.
