Retractable door handles, unlike traditional ones, are recessed into the door and are not accessible in their original position. Automakers claim that this design improves aerodynamic performance. However, many consumers find this solution inconvenient and even potentially dangerous.
According to JD Power, in 2024, electric vehicle owners reported issues with door handles at an average rate of 3.1 incidents per 100 vehicles.
This decision was prompted by several fatal incidents where passengers could not escape from vehicles because the doors would not open. Last year, an investigation was launched regarding the Tesla Model 3 due to difficulties with the door opening mechanism.
Chinese regulatory authorities indicated that automakers must change the design of door handles for already approved and in-development vehicle models by January 2029.
