Infected ant pupae send a chemical signal to workers 'kill me'

Unlike the pupae of worker ants, infected queen pupae, which are significantly larger and more important in terms of the genetic interests of the colony, do not emit such signals. Instead, these pupae focus their resources on strengthening their immune system, allowing them to fight off the infection.

The results obtained are consistent with the predictions of kin selection theory.
