Pediatrician explains how to recognize anemia in children

Anemia is one of the most common blood disorders, affecting 25% to 40% of children. Pediatrician from the City Children's Clinical Emergency Hospital, Zhazgul Muratalieva, shared this information on the air of Birinchi Radio.

According to her, anemia is characterized by a decrease in hemoglobin and erythrocytes in the blood. "In the case of iron deficiency anemia, there is a reduction of iron in the body's tissues," added the specialist.

The most susceptible to this disease are children under three years old and adolescents during puberty. According to the World Health Organization, anemia affects hundreds of millions of children, and about 50% of young children suffer from iron deficiency.

Among the symptoms of anemia, the following can be highlighted:

— pallor of the skin;
— general weakness;
— dry skin;
— increased fatigue;
— dizziness;
— headaches;
— changes in taste and smell perceptions.

The main causes of anemia include:

— rapid growth in children under three years;
— lack of iron in the diet after six months;
— iron deficiency in the mother during pregnancy.

Muratalieva recommends conducting a complete blood count for timely detection of anemia: at the age of 6 months, 1 year, 2 years, before starting school, and during puberty.

If the diagnosis is confirmed, the doctor may prescribe treatment and make adjustments to the diet. It is important for the diet to be varied and include vegetables, fruits, and meat products.

Additionally, it is important for adolescents to undergo regular medical check-ups at the age of 15–16 for anemia diagnosis.
