The authorities of Moldova have begun the procedure for denouncing the main agreements on which the Commonwealth of Independent States is based. This statement was made by Foreign Minister Mihai Popșoi on Radio Moldova, as reported by RIA Novosti.
According to him, this concerns three key documents. After their denunciation, the republic will officially cease its participation in the CIS. "The process has been initiated, the decision has been made, and the approval procedure has started," added the Foreign Minister.
It is expected that the relevant documents will be reviewed by the parliament after the start of the new session, and the discussion may take place as early as mid-February. If the parliament approves them, and then President Maia Sandu signs them, Moldova will finally exit the CIS.
Since 2022, Moldova has not participated in the meetings of the CIS bodies and has effectively suspended cooperation with the Eurasian Economic Union, in which it has observer status. The country's authorities plan to redirect their foreign economic ties and exports to Western markets, as well as adapt the international legal framework to European standards, following the course towards Eurointegration.
By the end of 2025, the republic plans to denounce 67 out of 255 agreements previously signed within the framework of the CIS.
The opposition criticizes the current course of the authorities, pointing to potential negative consequences for labor migrants and economic ties. Former President and leader of the Party of Socialists Igor Dodon has previously emphasized that the actions of the current leadership contradict national interests and do not reflect the opinion of the majority of citizens.
