In an interview with the British podcast The Rest is Politics, Sandu confirmed that she would support a referendum on joining Romania. As she noted, this decision is driven by the need to protect Moldova from pressure from Russia.

She explained: "If we hold a referendum, I will vote for unification with Romania," emphasizing that a small country like Moldova faces increasing difficulties in maintaining democracy and sovereignty.

Sandu has repeatedly pointed to Moscow's interference in Moldova's internal affairs, which strengthens her position in favor of closer ties with Romania.

According to Reuters, about 1.5 million out of 2.4 million residents of Moldova hold Romanian citizenship. However, polls show that only a third of the population supports the idea of unification.

The president also acknowledged that her views are not shared by the majority of citizens. She believes that a more realistic goal for Moldova is to join the European Union.

The Moldovan government aims to join the EU by 2030, which will require implementing a number of serious reforms.
