On the evening of January 4, Kaja Kallas, the EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, made a statement calling for respect for Venezuela's sovereignty and support for a peaceful transition to democracy in light of the actions of the United States to seize Nicolás Maduro. This statement was published as the official position of the European Union, as reported by DW.

Kallas emphasized the importance of adhering to international law under any circumstances and pointed out the special responsibility of the United States as a permanent member of the UN Security Council.

In its statement, the European Union noted the necessity of combating transnational organized crime and drug trafficking; however, this must occur "with full respect for the principles of territorial integrity and sovereignty."
