Poet G. Momunova was born in the village of Ken-Aral in the Leninpol district of the Talas region in a peasant family. In 1955, she graduated from Secondary School No. 1 in the city of Talas, and in 1960 from the V. Mayakovsky Kyrgyz State Pedagogical Institute.
From 1961 to 1969, she worked as a literary employee at the editorial office of the newspaper "Sovettik Kyrgyzstan," and from 1971 as an editor at the "Kyrgyzstan" publishing house. From 1973, she served as the responsible secretary and deputy chief editor of the magazine "Kyrgyzstan Ailadary."
She has been publishing since 1955. Her first poetry collection "Tilek" ("Dream") was published in 1964. She is the author of several poetry collections in her native language, two in Russian, and translated editions, as well as a co-author of many translated collective poetry collections.
She translated I. Zhakanov's novella "Returned Song" (1973) into Kyrgyz. She regularly appears in print with essays and journalistic articles.
A member of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union since 1974, a member of the Union of Soviet Writers since 1973, and a member of the Union of Journalists of the USSR since 1965.
She was awarded a Certificate of Honor from the Supreme Council of the Kyrgyz SSR.
