Poet and art critic S. Asanbekov was born in the village of Aral in the Talas region of Kyrgyzstan into a peasant family.
In 1953, he graduated from Secondary School No. 1 in Talas, in 1958 — from the philological faculty of KGU, and in 1966 — from the postgraduate program at the Academy of Sciences of the Kyrgyz SSR, having interned at the Institute of Arts of the Ministry of Culture of the USSR in Moscow.
He began his career in 1958 as a research associate at the KGMI, and from 1966 he worked as the director of the House of Actors of the KTO, from 1968 — as the director of the art school in Frunze, and from 1975 — as head of the culture and art editorial office at the Main Editorial Office of the KSE of the Academy of Sciences of the Kyrgyz SSR. Since 1977, he has been the head of the art editorial office at the publishing house "Kyrgyzstan," and from 1967 to 1968 and from 1986 — head of the art department at the editorial office of the newspaper "Kyrgyzstan Madeniyaty."
He has been published since 1949. His first poetry collection "Yrgak" ("Rhythm") was published in 1963. The main creative focus of S. Asanbekov manifested itself in criticism and art studies. He is the author of the monographs "Survтchu" ("Artist") and "Gapar Aitiev," dedicated to the work of the People's Artist of the USSR, Hero of Socialist Labor G. Aitiev, as well as the books "Azyrky kyrgyz dramasy" ("Modern Kyrgyz Drama"), "Kolhoznyy muzey," published in Russian in 1984, and others.
He has been a member of the Union of Soviet Writers since 1980 and a member of the Union of Journalists of the USSR since 1980.
