The Poet Salibay Shatmanov

Poet S. Shatmanov was born in the village of Kyzyl-Dzhar in the Jangi-Dzhoy district of the Osh region into a peasant family. In 1950, he graduated from high school in the city of Tash-Kumyr, in 1953 — from the Jalal-Abad Teacher's Institute, and in 1966 — from the philological faculty of KGU.

From 1953 to 1960, he worked as a deputy director and director of the Jangi-Dzhoy eight-year school, from 1966 to 1983 — as a literary employee and head of the department at the editorial office of the newspaper "Mugalimder gazetasy," and since 1986, he has been a senior editor at the "Mektep" publishing house.

The poet's first publications appeared in 1950 in the pages of the Jalal-Abad regional newspaper "Bol'shevisttink jol." His first poetry collection "Guldeste" ("Flower Garden") was published in 1961. He mainly writes for children. Having worked in journalism for many years, S. Shatmanov has written a number of essays and articles dedicated to the problems of educating the younger generation. He has translated works by S. Baruzdin, V. Astafyev, K. Ushinsky, I. Kozhedub, A. Dorofeev, and others into Kyrgyz.

He is an honored educator of the Kyrgyz SSR and an honored educator of the USSR.

Member of the Union of Soviet Writers since 1967.

Awarded the medal "For Valorous Labor. In Commemoration of the 100th Anniversary of the Birth of V. I. Lenin," and Honorary Certificates from the Central Committee of the Komsomol.
