Poet, Prose Writer Omor Sultanov

Poet and prose writer O. Sultanov was born on November 6, 1935, in the village of Tosor, Jeti-Oguz district of the Issyk-Kul region, in a family of civil servants. In 1953, he graduated from Barskoon Secondary School, and in 1959, from the philological faculty of KGU.

He began his labor biography in 1959 as a literary employee at the editorial office of the magazine "Ala-Too". In 1971 and 1986, he was elected secretary of the board of the Writers' Union of Kyrgyzstan. For several years, he headed the literary association named after A. Osmonov at the Central Committee of the Komsomol and the Writers' Union of Kyrgyzstan.
O. Sultanov began writing poetry at an early age. He has been published since 1957. His first poetry collection "Too kunderu" ("Mountain Days") was published in 1961. He is the author of a number of prose works. In 1967, a collection of novellas and essays "Ak jol, kek asman" ("White Road, Blue Sky") was released. He has written several scripts for feature films and documentaries produced at the "Kyrgyzfilm" studio.

The writer's works have been translated and published in Russian, with some works published in Kazakh, English, Spanish, and other languages. A significant part of O. Sultanov's work is devoted to translation. He has translated into Kyrgyz and published poems by P. Neruda and M. Yu. Lermontov's poem "Demon". He is a co-author of about twenty translated collective collections.
A member of the CPSU since 1964, a member of the USSR Writers' Union since 1964.
