
Poet J. Abdykalikov was born in the village of Tashtak in the Issyk-Kul district of the Issyk-Kul region in a peasant family.
In 1954, he graduated from Tashtak Secondary School, and in 1959 — from the philological faculty of KSU. Since 1959, he worked in the editorial offices of the magazine "Zhas lenninchi" and the newspaper "Leninchil zhas", and from 1976 to 1988, he served as the editor of the newspaper "Kyrgyzstan pioneri".
He has been published since 1956. His first poetry collection "Zhyldyzstan" ("Star Country") was released in 1961. He mainly writes for children. His poems have been translated into many languages of the fraternal republics, some of them published in English, Bulgarian, and German. He translated a number of works by A. S. Pushkin, M. Y. Lermontov, T. G. Shevchenko, V. V. Mayakovsky, as well as poems by Bangladeshi poets and Latin American poets into Kyrgyz.
He is a Honored Worker of Culture of the Kyrgyz SSR (1985).
In 1970, he was awarded the Lenin Komsomol Prize of Kyrgyzstan for the poem "Ak tolkundar" ("White Waves").
He has been a member of the CPSU since 1965, a member of the Union of Soviet Writers since 1967, and a member of the Union of Journalists of the USSR since 1961.
He has been awarded Honorary Certificates from the Supreme Soviet of the Kyrgyz SSR, the Central Committee of the VLKSM, and the Central Committee of the LCSM of Kyrgyzstan, and holds the badge "Excellence in Public Education of the Kyrgyz SSR".
