Poet Tolen Shamshiev Poet T. Shamshiev was born on October 14, 1910, in the village of Kurshab, Uzgen District, Osh Region, into a poor family. From 1927, he was raised in the Uzgen boarding school, graduated from the Jalal-Abad Pedagogical School in 1932, and in 1957—completed the correspondence department of the Kyrgyz State Pedagogical Institute in Frunze. From 1936 to 1938, he studied at the editor-translators' courses at the Central Committee of the VKP(b) in Moscow.

In 1932, he was the head of the department at the editorial office of the newspaper "Leninchil Zhas," and from 1938 to 1940—editor of this newspaper, from 1933 to 1935—responsible secretary of the newspaper "Kyrgyzstan Pioneri." From 1938 to 1942 and from 1946 to 1954, he held responsible positions in the republic's print media, the radio committee, and the RK trade union of education workers, and from 1980 to 1986, with some interruptions, he worked as the director of the Kyrgyz branch of the USSR Literary Fund. From 1942 to 1945, T. Shamshiev served in the ranks of the Soviet Army. He was a participant in the Great Patriotic War.

He has been published since 1931. His first poetry collection "Otuz-Adyr" was published in 1934. The main theme of the poet's work in the 1930s was the creative labor of collective farmers on Kyrgyz land. In 1935, his play "Slezy" was published, reflecting the life of working peasants in southern Kyrgyzstan.

He is the author of several poetry collections, as well as many stories, essays, memoirs, and journalistic articles. He translated works of V. V. Mayakovsky, S. Aini, M. Jalil, N. Tikhonov, M. Syntimbranu, Tureun Parda, and others into Kyrgyz.

A member of the CPSU since 1938, a member of the Union of Soviet Writers since 1936.

He was awarded the Order of the Patriotic War I degree, medals for "Victory over Germany in the Great Patriotic War of 1941—1945," "For Valorous Labor. In Commemoration of the 100th Anniversary of V. I. Lenin's Birth," "For the Capture of Berlin," "For Labor Distinction," "20 Years of Victory in the Great Patriotic War of 1941—1945," "30 Years of Victory in the Great Patriotic War of 1941—1945," "50 Years of the Armed Forces of the USSR," "Veteran of Labor," and Honorary Certificates from the Supreme Soviet of the Kyrgyz SSR and the Belarusian SSR.
He was elected as a deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the Kyrgyz SSR of the I convocation.
