Poet S. Turgunbaev was born in the village of Besh-Kadam in the Bazar-Kurgan district of the Osh region into a peasant family. In 1959, he graduated from high school in the village of Bazar-Kurgan, and in 1964— from the philological faculty of KGU.
He began his labor biography in 1964 as a teacher of his native language and literature in a high school in the Alaï district. From 1966, he worked as a junior researcher at the Institute of Language and Literature of the Academy of Sciences of the Kirghiz SSR, from 1970 to 1984— head of the department at the editorial office of the newspaper "Kyrgyzstan Madeniyati," and from 1986 to 1988— literary consultant on criticism for the Writers' Union of Kyrgyzstan.
He has been published since 1960. His first poetry collection "Bizde baary suylayt" ("Everyone Talks Here") was published in 1966. He is the author of several collections of poems and poems, literary-critical articles, and translations into Kyrgyz of works by V. Mayakovsky, M. Yu. Lermontov, I. Chavchavadze, Ya-Shivazy, Mongolian folk poetry, and others.
Member of the USSR Writers' Union since 1979.
