Prose writer, translator T. Akhmetov was born in the village of Alchaluu in the Chui region of the Kirghiz SSR in a peasant family.
In 1956, he graduated from high school in his native village, in 1964 — from the journalism department of the philological faculty of KGU, and in 1973 — from the postgraduate program at the Academy of Sciences of the Kirghiz SSR.
From 1964 to 1966, he served in the ranks of the Soviet Army.
Since 1966, he has worked as a proofreader at KirTAG, a research associate at the Kirghiz State Archive, a junior research associate at the Institute of Language and Literature of the Academy of Sciences of the Kirghiz SSR, and a literary employee at the editorial office of the magazine "Ala-Too," later — "Zhas Leninchi."
Since 1979, he has been the senior editor of the "Kyrgyzfilm" studio.
He has been published since 1961. His first collection of short stories "Sagynych" ("Longing") was published in 1969.
He is the author of a number of literary and critical articles dedicated to the problems of the development of modern Kyrgyz prose. He has translated works by G. Nosov, I. Ziedonis, N. Yermolovich, and others into Kyrgyz, as well as several films.
He has been a member of the Union of Writers of the USSR since 1986.
