In various printmaking techniques (lithography, etching, linocut), Joseph Antonovich Belevich worked extensively. He created large cycles such as "In the Advanced Brigades" (1960, autolithography), "Among the City Executives" (1966, autolithography), "Kyrgyzstan is Being Built" (1966, linocut), and numerous individual prints dedicated to the present day of the republic.
Belevich, with his keen ability to observe distinct traits of nature, which he studies closely and thoroughly, often translates natural sketches into prints, enhancing their graphic expressiveness through the medium. Such are the genre and landscape etchings "Autumn Wind" (1962), "Calm on the Beach", "Melody of the Temir-Komuz" (1964); lithographs and autolithographs "Gurzuf. Accidental Snow" (1962), "Talassians Await the Airplane" (1962), "At Chon-Tash" (1965), "In the Quarry" (1966); linocuts "Stormy Weather" (1966), "At the Kant Cement Plant" (1966), "Behind the Weekend Portal" (1966), and many other sheets inspired by direct observations. In some particularly successful landscape and genre prints, Belevich emerges as a subtle lyricist. Such are the lithographs "Evening Motif" (1960), "At the Telegraph. Lily of the Valley" (1963), and the etching "Spring Flood on the Sviyaga" (1961), which accurately convey the state of spring nature. In the latter, a smooth, transparently gray tone is achieved, with sparse, precise lines outlining the shapes of trees and the water's surface, together creating an image of the spring awakening of nature. The etching "Autumn Still Life" (1980) is also expressive.
In his portrait works, the artist most often does not deviate from the external-objective data of nature, not emphasizing the task of penetrating into the psychological world of a person and not sharpening the image (etchings "Electric Welder Mozgovoy", 1960; "Electrical Engineer", 1960; "Female Portrait", 1963; "Division Commander Gritsev", 1964; autolithographs "Worker from the Machine Engineering", 1963; "Young Kyrgyz", 1963; linocut "Embroidery Woman", 1965, etc.). In those sheets where the model emotionally captivated the artist, the images of people became individualized. Thus, in the succinctly composed portrait "Blacksmith Abdrakhmanov", a person is depicted as impressive and substantial, with a determined face and strong hands of a craftsman. This is not just a social type; a firm character and the significance of the personality are palpable in him.
