Prose writer, translator Ashim Jakypbekov


Prose writer and translator A. Jakypbekov was born on August 12, 1935, in the village of Sheker, Kirov District of the Talas Region, in a peasant family.
After finishing seven years of school in his native village, he continued his studies at Kyrgyz Secondary School No. 5 named after A. S. Pushkin in Frunze in 1953. In 1958, he graduated from the philological faculty of K. GU.
From 1958 to 1961, he worked as a literary employee at the editorial office of the magazine "Ala-Too", from 1961 he was a teacher at a secondary school in Sheker, and from 1964 he was an editor-consultant at the State Publishing House of the Kyrgyz SSR. Since 1965, he has been the head of the children's and youth literature department at the "Mektep" publishing house, and since 1969 he has been the chief editor of the "Kyrgyzfilm" film studio. Since 1985, he has worked in the sector for the artistic publication of the epic "Manas", and since 1987 he has been the deputy chief editor of the newspaper "Kyrgyzstan Madeniyati".
In 1961, his first collection of stories "Zharaluu keguchken" ("Wounded Dove") was published. A prominent place in the writer's work is occupied by the novella "Kataal bagyt" ("Harsh Path"), released in 1966. He is currently working on a literary prose adaptation of the epic "Manas". He has translated novellas by S. Zweig, the novel by M. Yu. Lermontov "A Hero of Our Time", many plays by A. M. Gorky, A. P. Chekhov, and works by Ch. Aitmatov.
The works of A. Jakypbekov have been published in Russian, some of them in Kazakh.
He has been a member of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union since 1973 and a member of the Union of Soviet Writers since 1963.
