
Prose writer M. Abakirov was born on March 15, 1940, in the village of Burana, Chui region of the Kyrgyz SSR, in a peasant family.
In 1957, he graduated from high school in the village of Onbir-Dzhylga, and in 1963— from the philological faculty of KRU.
In 1963, he was assigned as a teacher to the M. Kureneev School in the Aravan district of Osh region, and from 1964 to 1965, he taught Kyrgyz language and literature at the eight-year school "Komsomol" in Kochkor district. Since 1965, he has been working in journalism: from 1965 to 1970, he was a literary employee, head of the department, responsible secretary, and deputy editor at the district newspaper "Emgekchin" in Issyk-Kul region; from 1970 to 1971— head of the department at the editorial office of the newspaper "Leninchil Zhas"; from 1971 to 1979— a literary employee, special correspondent, and deputy responsible secretary at the editorial office of the newspaper "Sovetnik Kyrgyzstan".
From 1979 to 1985, he worked as the chief editor of the State Publishing House of the Kyrgyz SSR, from 1985 to 1988— head of the editorial office at the "Mektep" publishing house, and since August 1988, he has been the chief editor of the "Adabiyat" publishing house.
He published his first stories during his student years. In 1978, his first collection of stories "Zhashtyk rapsodiyasy" ("Rhapsody of Youth") was released. His prose is characterized by attention to the moral development of the modern individual and to the pressing issues of our time. The writer is also known for his works for children. His works have been published in Russian and Turkmen languages. He has translated individual works of X. Jimenez, L. N. Tolstoy, O. Shestinsky, and others into Kyrgyz.
He has been a member of the CPSU since 1968, a member of the USSR Writers' Union since 1983, and a member of the USSR Union of Journalists since 1976.
He has been awarded a certificate of honor from the Supreme Council of the Kyrgyz SSR and the badge "Excellence in Printing".
