Prose writer Dzh. Medetov was born in the village of Terek in the Talas district of the Talas region in a peasant family. In 1958, he graduated from Aral Secondary School, and in 1963 — from the philological faculty of KSU.
He began his career as a teacher at the Naunkent Secondary School No. 9 in the Lenin district of the Osh region. Since 1965, he worked as a literary employee at the editorial office of the Osh regional newspaper "Lenin yolu".
From 1966 to 1971, he served as an editor, and from 1981 to 1988 — as a senior editor and deputy chief editor of the State Committee for Television and Radio of the Kyrgyz SSR. From 1971 to 1973, he was a senior research associate at the Main Editorial Office of the Great Soviet Encyclopedia of the Academy of Sciences of the Kyrgyz SSR, and from 1973, he headed the editorial office of children's and youth literature at the "Mektep" publishing house, and since 1988, he has been in charge of the same editorial office at the "Adabiyat" publishing house.
He has been published since 1965. His first collection of novellas and short stories "Murad ulama" ("Wisdom of Murad") was published in 1976. He is the author of several prose collections, translations of stories by M. Prishvin, and participated in the release of a collective translated collection "Solnyshko" (1978, 1979).
He has been a member of the Union of Writers of the USSR since 1979.
He was awarded a Certificate of Honor from the Central Committee of the Komsomol of Kyrgyzstan.
