Poet O. Kochkonov was born in the village of Kalinino in the Jangi-Jol district of the Osh region into a peasant family. In 1958, he graduated from Ak-Suu Secondary School, and in 1966, he completed the journalism department of the philological faculty at KGU.
He began his labor biography in 1958 as a collective farmer. From 1966, he worked as a literary employee at the editorial office of the district newspaper "Leninchil," from 1968 as a correspondent for the Osh regional committee for television and radio broadcasting, from 1969 as the head of the department at the editorial office of the newspaper "Mugalimder gazetasy," and from 1980 as an editor, senior editor, and head of the editorial office at the publishing house "Mektep,"
In 1988, he was elected head of the folklore and poetry department at the publishing house "Adabiyat."
He has been published since 1963. His first poetry collection "Bir tup terak" ("Tree") was published in 1975. The epic poem "Ereel talaa" ("Field of Battle"), published in 1981, represents a unique attempt to master the lyrical-epic narrative of oral folk art materials — myths, legends, epics, and lyrics. Some of the poet's individual poems have been published in Russian.
He has been a member of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union since 1969 and a member of the Union of Soviet Writers since 1986.
