Poet, critic Asylbek MedetbekovPoet and critic A. Medetbekov was born on June 29, 1939, in the village of Ken-Aral, Leninpol District, Talas Region, in a peasant family. In 1957, he graduated from the Chaldovar Boarding School, and in 1962, he graduated from the Philological Faculty of KSU.
From 1964 to 1967, he studied in the postgraduate program at the Institute of Philosophy and Law of the Academy of Sciences of the Kyrgyz SSR. He earned a Candidate of Philosophical Sciences degree in 1971.
He began his career as a teacher of his native language and literature at the K. Marx Eight-Year School in the Jergital District of the Tajik SSR. Since 1963, he worked at the Chui Secondary School and the Chon-Korgon Secondary School in the Kirov District of the Talas Region. From 1969, he served as a senior lecturer in the Department of Marxist-Leninist Philosophy at the Frunze Institute of Arts named after B. Beishenaliev, and from 1971, at the same department of the V. V. Mayakovsky KJPI. Since 1981, he has been engaged in creative work.
His creative debut came with poems published in print. His first book was a collection of stories and tales titled "Анда да жаз болчу" ("And Then It Was Spring"), published in 1968. He is the author of several poetry collections and a number of collections of literary-critical and literary studies articles concerning the development of Kyrgyz poetry, prose, and folklore. He has translated M. Jalil's drama "Алтынчач," as well as poems by R. Gamzatov, A. Tvardovsky, S. Marshak, and others into Kyrgyz.
He has been a member of the Union of Soviet Writers since 1987.
