In her interview with Politico, Ursula von der Leyen spoke about the conflict in Ukraine and commented on recent remarks by Donald Trump, who characterized Europe as a "decaying" group of countries with "weak" leaders.

Von der Leyen reaffirmed her commitment to transatlantic relations, noting that throughout her career she has developed good working relationships with U.S. presidents, which remains relevant today.

However, she acknowledged that relations between Europe and America are in a state of uncertainty, and this is not solely due to Trump's personality.

“Our relationship with the U.S. has changed. Why is this happening? Because we are changing ourselves. It is important to remember: what is our position and what is our strength? We must work on this, take pride in it, and defend a united Europe,” she added.

Von der Leyen also discussed the new U.S. national security strategy presented on December 5, which asserts that Europe is on the brink of "civilization destruction." In this context, she emphasized that Trump should not interfere in elections and democratic processes in European countries.

“No one but the people should decide who will be the leader in a country. This is the right of voters, and it should be protected. Outside interference is unacceptable,” she stressed.

The U.S. national security strategy emphasizes Trump's key idea that "America first," portraying him as a "president of the world" who advocates for non-interference. At the same time, the document contains accusations against European governments of "undermining democratic processes," while supranational structures like the European Union are criticized for posing a "threat to political freedom and sovereignty."

Additionally, Trump noted in his interview with Politico that Russia is interested in weakening Europe and expressed the opinion that new presidential elections should be held in Ukraine, even amid the ongoing conflict.
