In his address to supporters, Zokhran Mamdani, who won the election, emphasized the need to stop the actions of U.S. President Donald Trump. He noted that New York was built by immigrants and should now be led by an immigrant. "The city that birthed him can show how to defeat Trump," Mamdani stated, adding that it is necessary to dismantle the conditions that allowed the president to accumulate power (quote from CNN).

34-year-old Mamdani, originally from Uganda, will be the first Muslim to hold the position of Mayor of New York City. He announced that he will begin his work in the new position on January 1, and one of the key tasks of his administration is to combat the "cost of living crisis."

According to preliminary data, Mamdani received 50.4% of the votes with 90.5% of ballots counted, while independent candidate and former mayor Andrew Cuomo garnered 41.6%. Trump had previously threatened to cut federal support for New York if Mamdani won, who has been repeatedly criticized by the president, who called him a communist.
