In the New York City mayoral election, Zokhran Mamdani emerged victorious, becoming the first Muslim to hold this position. This was reported by various foreign news agencies.
According to the press, 34-year-old Mamdani managed to secure the highest number of votes, surpassing former governor Andrew Cuomo.
This event is recognized as historic, as no Muslim has previously held the position of mayor of New York City.
Zokhran Mamdani was born in Uganda to Indian immigrant parents. His mother, renowned filmmaker Mira Nair, and father, scholar Mahmood Mamdani, played a significant role in his upbringing. He lived in South Africa during his childhood and later moved to New York, where he obtained U.S. citizenship in 2018.
The politician is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America and actively advocates for affordable housing, free public transportation, and an increase in the minimum wage.
Previously, U.S. President Donald Trump expressed the opinion that if Mamdani won, there could be a review of federal funding for New York. However, the newly elected mayor confidently stated that he would not allow pressure to be exerted on him.
