US President Donald Trump stated that his country possesses the largest stockpile of nuclear weapons in the world, which is capable of destroying the planet 150 times. He made this announcement in an interview with CBS News.
During the conversation, Trump noted that Russia and China are conducting nuclear tests but do not officially inform about them. He also pointed out similar actions by North Korea and Pakistan.
“I do not wish to be the only nation that does not conduct tests. We have enough nuclear arsenal to destroy the world 150 times,” Trump emphasized.
The president added that he discussed nuclear armament issues with Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping. He noted that it is important to strive for the reduction of nuclear stockpiles, but specific steps in this direction have not yet been announced.
The Kremlin has already made a statement that Russia will respond in case of a violation of the existing moratorium on nuclear tests. However, both Moscow and Washington expressed their readiness for dialogue on security issues.
Earlier, the United Nations reacted to Trump's statement about the possibility of conducting nuclear tests.
UN representative Farhan Haq stated, “Nuclear tests are unacceptable under any circumstances.” He also reminded that over the past eight decades, more than 2000 nuclear tests have been conducted, resulting in devastating consequences.
The Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty was adopted in 1996 but has not yet entered into force, as it has not been ratified by all countries, including Russia and the US.
