Today, October 30, an important meeting took place between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping as part of the APEC summit in Busan, according to media reports. This is their first in-person contact since 2019.
Trump, while welcoming Xi Jinping, noted his strong qualities as a negotiator, while the Chinese leader emphasized the importance of partnership between the two countries.
At the beginning of the conversation, Xi Jinping noted that they maintained regular contacts, including three phone calls, to preserve stability in bilateral relations.
“Recently, our economic and trade teams held a new round of negotiations in Kuala Lumpur and reached preliminary agreements on key issues of mutual interest. This created the necessary foundation for our meeting,” Xi reported.
He also added that differences between the countries are natural due to the different conditions in each of them.
“As the two largest economies in the world, we occasionally face frictions - this is inevitable. In the face of challenges, President Trump and I must manage the situation so that our relations continue to develop,” the Chinese leader emphasized.
Among the topics of discussion are trade tariffs: the U.S. is demanding a reduction in some duties, while China is seeking to ease trade pressures.
There is also discussion about the possibility of freezing or delaying new restrictions on the export of rare earth and critical minerals from China.
Additionally, one of the key topics is the import of agricultural products. The resumption of soybean purchases from the U.S. is seen as an important step towards an agreement.
Amid these negotiations, unresolved issues remain in the areas of technology, Taiwan security, and global influence.
