Trump emphasized: “I canceled the meeting with Putin because I see no point in trying to achieve the necessary result. Every time we have productive discussions, but they lead nowhere. Therefore, I decided to cancel the meeting, although we can return to this issue in the future.”
The meeting was initially agreed upon during a phone call between Trump and Putin that took place on October 16, but a specific date was not announced. Later, on October 21, the Financial Times and The Telegraph reported its cancellation, linking this decision to a phone call between U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, which occurred on October 20.
Kirill Dmitriev, special representative of the President of Russia for economic cooperation with foreign countries and head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF), noted that preparations for the meeting continue despite its cancellation.
The day before, Trump also stated that a final decision regarding the meeting between the U.S. and Russian presidents has not yet been made.
