Professor Gislason suggested that there may be more than three mosquitoes in Iceland. He noted that these insects are capable of surviving the winter by finding shelter in basements and attics, where the temperature does not drop below zero.

According to information from The Guardian, all the found mosquitoes belong to the species Culiseta annulata, including two females and one male.

Previously, Iceland and Antarctica were considered some of the few places on the planet free from mosquitoes.

Due to global warming, Iceland is facing climate changes occurring four times faster than in other regions of the Northern Hemisphere. The Guardian also reports that as a result of the climate crisis, the country's glaciers are beginning to collapse, and fish previously not found in these waters, such as mackerel, are appearing.
